Today in the Oregon legislature, the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources and the House Committee on Environment and Water held a joint information hearing on climate change issues. There was no specific bill that was at issue today. The hearing was simply an overview of climate issues so that legislators would have more background on the issues once they do start to consider specific bills.
The main speaker was Philip Mote, who is about to become the new director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute, which was created by the legislature in 2007. He gave a very good overview of the science of climate change and how changes in the planet's climate have been studied throughout the years. Other experts such as Angus Duncan, the chair of the Oregon Global Warming Commission, also spoke.
All in all, it was a very informative session. If you want to listen to an archived audio copy of the hearing, go to the Oregon legislative website's
audio archives and scroll down to "Audio Archives" and click on "2009 Session." Then click on "Archives of Committee Meetings from the 2009 Session" and under Senate Committees, click on "Environment and Natural Resources." You will then see a list of dates. Click on "1/27/2009". You will need to have a Real Audio player installed on your computer to have the file load and play. The Capitol website will help you download Real Audio if you don't already have it.
Stay tuned. There's a lot more climate advocacy to come!
