Over the last several days, there have been a lot of meetings with legislators about climate issues. Those meetings are often very interesting. The purpose is mostly to introduce the subject of climate to legislators and make connections amongst all the bills that are part of the climate package. Some legislators have thought a lot about the issue. Others may have some awareness but have most questions. While it's still early to be nailing down votes, the meetings give a good idea about which legislators are where and what kind of information each legislator needs.
It's occurred to me that this series of meetings with legislators is a lot like the answer that Cesar Chavez gave once to the question about how someone brings about social change. He said, "well, first I talk to one person. Then I talk to another person. Then I talk to another person. And so on."
It's going to be a lot of work to make sure that the support that the public has for taking strong action on climate change is translated into votes in the legislative process. That means a lot of conversations. You can be part of that conversation too. Go to the
Global Warming section of the Priorities for a Healthy Oregon and send your legislators a letter, asking them to move forward on climate change in 2009. Or tell them yourself in person at
Climate Lobby Day on February 10. But get involved in the discussion now!
